Diabetes Risk Factors – Information for Seniors

Our Indianapolis Caregivers help seniors live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes.

Diabetes is a common disease and it can affect people of all ages. There are three types of diabetes and each type has its own set of risk factors. The presence of one or more of these factors could indicate that an individual is at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Below is a list that provides the risk factors for each of the three types of diabetes.

1. Type 1 diabetes risk factors include family history and genetics. If you have family members who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, you will be at a higher risk of developing the disease. Disease of the pancreas or injury to the pancreas can have an effect on how the body produces insulin, placing you at a high risk. Rare infections and illnesses that affect the pancreas are also a risk factor.

2. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include being over-weight, having an impaired glucose tolerance and having insulin resistance. In addition, your ethnic background could also be a risk factor. Type 2 diabetes occurs more often in Hispanic/Latino Americans, Native Americans, Alaska natives, African-Americans and Asian-Americans. High blood pressure, family history, no exercise and age can all be risk factors.

3. Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women. The risk factors for this type of diabetes include obesity, age, family history and previous glucose intolerance.

4. The best way to reduce risks associated with diabetes is to maintain a healthy weight, exercise daily, have a healthy and balanced diet and manage your blood pressure. These things can reduce the chances of developing all types of diabetes.

How Preventative Medicine Can Benefit Aging

The statistics show that only 25% of Americans aged 50 to 64 seek preventative medical care that can really make a difference to their future. Many of these individuals think that these services are unnecessary, and they look at them as costs that they do not need to invest in when they are paying out of pocket. The CDC is beginning an awareness program to encourage American adults to see care that can really benefit them as they age, resulting in fewer medical issues and in turn decreased costs.

Preventative medical services that older adults can benefit from include:

• Vaccinations  - middle-aged adults and seniors should receive routine vaccines for illnesses like influenza pneumococcal disease

• Blood tests and screening – routine doctor’s visits should be encouraged which allow medical professionals to monitor cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels which can both prevent and allow for early diagnosis of health issues

• Technological screening – the technology today allows for less invasive screening for conditions like breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer and should be done regularly, dependent upon family history, age and the advice of a doctor

Older adults may put off preventative care in order to reduce their costs, but by following through with preventative steps they can secure their future health and costs that can arise from the treatment of much more serious medical conditions.

Helping Seniors Enjoy the Holidays

Grandma's WreathThe holiday season can be hard for many seniors, especially those who have lost a loved one and are remembering times past that can never happen again. For others, the holidays are simply a source of stress because they can be extremely overwhelming. Here are some ways the families can help their loved ones better enjoy the holiday season:

1. Allow memories and past rituals to live on – don’t discourage seniors from reliving those important memories of holidays past, thinking that it will prevent depression. Share memories of family members no longer with you, look at photos, and keep old family traditions alive

2. Make sure visiting seniors are comfortable – to help reduce the stress of seniors coming into your home over the holidays, make sure that your home is senior-friendly, with safety being the primary concern

3. Avoid impulsive holiday activities – to ensure that seniors can be involved with all holiday activities, avoid being impulsive that way seniors can be well-rested for more excitement

4. Focus on the joy – while it’s okay to reminisces, over the holidays make sure that all memories discussed focus on the positive

5. Create new traditions – while you can focus on incorporating old rituals into the holidays, create new ones as well that give the whole family, including seniors, new things to look forward to doing together. Holiday activities can’t just focus on the past

7 Ways to Convince Seniors to Accept Help

For many seniors, their biggest fear is losing independence, and that can come with agreeing to accept senior care help as they get older. No matter how necessary it might be, Indianapolis seniors might refuse to look at the realities in order to hold onto whatever independence they have left, and unfortunately, it can fall to family members and friends to convince them. Here are 7 ways to convince seniors to accept help:

1. Remember change is difficult for everyone – their resistance might be frustrating, but think about how you would feel in the same situation
2. Give him/her time to come around – introduce changes slowly, but don’t force them. Eventually, the changes if for your senior’s benefit will be more accepted, once they get past denying they need help
3. Keep on trying – if you try to introduce a change and it’s not accepted, wait and try again. Sometimes even 15 minutes can make a world of difference
4. Keep them involved in decisions – let your senior know he/she does have a say in making decisions about care. However, do try and be persuasive about introducing care options
5. Offer a trial period – if they are resistant, persuade your senior to give your suggestion a try. A trial period with a home caregiver or with you helping around the house may help them to realize how much it can ease their burden
6. Present it as help for them – when suggesting you help them out or hire a caregiver, don’t present it as a result of their limitations, tell them it’s to have someone available to clean up around the house so they don’t feel obligated, or to help with moving of heavy objects
7. Know when to stop pushing – remember, that despite your concerns, your senior is still someone who is capable and allowed to make their own decisions. If you have tried the above to no avail, no when to stop pushing otherwise you might risk your relationship

Aging Loses Independence

While it may seem obvious to the family that a senior is in need of help around the home in order to ensure their health and safety is first priority, the obstacle can be convincing a senior that it’s okay to give up part of their independence as they age. For many seniors, the worst thing that can happen to them is to end up in a nursing home or assisted living facility; but just because a little help is required, doesn’t mean that has to be their fate.

Professional caregivers can provide Indianapolis seniors the help that they need so they are not overburdened by the responsibilities of caring for a home and for themselves, especially when it creates a strain on their health. With professional caregivers providing seniors help with just about anything they need; from helping with bathing/dressing, preparing meals, running errands, and even light-housekeeping and laundry, seniors are provided with the option to stay in their homes while maintaining their established lifestyles. While a potential loss of independence may be scary, this is an option that gives Indianapolis seniors the best of both worlds.

Have You Considered Alzheimer’s Care at Home?

If you have a family member suffering with Alzheimer’s, you know how hard it can be to make decisions about their care, especially when the responsibility falls to you alone. While you might have heard about care options like nursing homes and assisted living facilities to help with Alzheimer’s care, you haven’t considered every option until you’ve looked into home care in Indianapolis and the surrounding area. Instead of shipping your loved one off to a new residence, your senior can remain living at home with a little bit of help.

Home care agencies like Home Instead Senior Care can provide the following services to seniors living with Alzheimer’s:

• Maintain a safe environment

• Manage changing behaviors

• Provide nutritious meals

• Provide mind-stimulating activities

• Create social interaction

• Supervise daily activities

To ensure that you find the best caregiver to provide care to your senior at home, make sure you ask the following questions when speaking with a home care agency that specializes in Alzheimer’s:

• Does your staff have Alzheimer’s specific training?

• Does the agency cater to a large number of people with Alzheimer’s? How Many?

• Can the senior with Alzheimer’s spend some time with a prospective caregiver to make sure they are a good match before they are contracted for time?

• Can I check references of your agency regarding specific Alzheimer’s care experience?

Deciding on Home Care for Mom

Q – I have thought about home care for my aging mother in Indianapolis; but how do I know when it’s the right time?

A – There is no cut and dry answer for when it’s right to bring home care into the life of a Indianapolis senior like your mother, but there are some life situations that seniors can encounter which makes home care ideal for them.  If your mother finds herself experiencing one or more of the following scenarios, then it may be time to consider home care for her.

• She’s struggling with Activities of Daily Living – seniors who struggle with dressing, bathing, preparing meals, taking their medications, or keeping up with chores around the home are ideal candidates for in-home senior care

• Her mobility is declining – seniors who are having changes with their balance and mobility may be at a greater risk of falling or having an accident in the home when trying to perform ADLs . By hiring a caregiver, safety issues can be addressed and prevented through additional help

• She’s given up driving – seniors who no longer drive for whatever reason, would greatly benefit from the help of a caregiver who can take them to run errands or to appointments

• She doesn’t have family nearby – seniors who have the above problems but do not have family nearby to help them can benefit from in home care when there’s no one else out there to help them

• She’s recently come out of hospital or rehab – after seniors have been released from the hospital or rehab program and are in recovery, it’s better for seniors to have the help of a caregiver so they don’t put too much of a burden on their bodies by trying to care for themselves or their homes

• She suffers from Alzheimer’s or dementia

Finding a Caregiver You Can Trust

With many home care agencies, you never know who’s going to turn up on a Indianapolis senior’s doorstep each day of their scheduled care. But what this means is that seniors never have the opportunity to trust, bond and form a friendship with their senior caregivers. At Home Instead Senior Care, we know that the right caregiver is one that a senior can get to know, begin to trust with their home and their care, and someone who will become an important companion. Every day a senior has home care scheduled, we send the same caregiver to provide consistency and because through our process we ensure that the caregiver sent is one that meshes with the senior’s personal needs and personality.

When we send a new caregiver to a senior’s home for the first time, we complete an in-depth assessment to evaluate the needs of the senior and the type of caregiver who would be best suited for the role. However, just because a senior has been sent a caregiver, doesn’t mean that they’re stuck with them forever. If a senior or their family is not satisfied with the caregiver, we will be happy to send a replacement that better meets the request.

Once the right caregiver has been matched with a senior, you’ll never be able to separate them!

How Seniors Stay Independent

Indianapolis families often ask what the benefits are of hiring a senior caregiver to provide home care in order to understand why they should do it. The benefits are endless, so the question really should be more, why shouldn’t you hire a senior caregiver? Hiring an in home caregiver gives seniors the option of remaining in their own homes, and maintaining some level of independence they might not otherwise have if they were to move to a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Home caregivers for seniors can also change the lives of family caregivers, who can find themselves devoting their lives and their time to care for a loved one. Family caregivers don’t need to give up their responsibilities, but with the help of a senior caregiver, can get the break that they need from someone who is able to allow a senior to maintain their chosen lifestyle, schedule and routines rather than have their world turned upside down just because they’re getting older.

Hiring a senior caregiver to help a loved one at home is about providing them the independence they deserve and allowing them to age with dignity while maintaining the way of life that they’ve chosen for themselves. Giving it all up would be too grave a loss, but with the option of home care, it doesn’t have to come to that for Indianapolis seniors.

Learning About Geriatric Assessments

Q – I’m a family caregiver for an elderly grandparent in Indianapolis. At the caregiver support group I attend, someone introduced the idea of a geriatric assessment. What does it involve and how could it benefit my grandparent?

A – First of all, it’s very commendable that you are seeking support within your local community from other caregivers, and as I’m sure you’re discovering, they can be great resources to learn about care options in Indianapolis. Geriatric assessments can be completed by medical professionals, such as doctors or nurses in a variety of settings, including an outpatient clinic, hospital, or even your grandparent’s home. Often, geriatric assessments are recommended to older adults who are exhibiting signs of confusion, memory loss or dementia; but can be requested by anyone who wants professional insight from a healthcare perspective about improving and forecasting eldercare.

A geriatric assessment involves the following:

• Assessing a senior’s status by looking at physical, mental and psycho-social; factors; their ability to perform activities of daily living independently, and any care they currently receive

• Identifying problems that might be present based on the senior’s status now or in the future

• Developing a “Care Plan” with recommendations for support services

• Helping seniors attain the support they require

• Monitoring the success of the care plan
